When you are buying a new vacuum cleaner, you may see a couple of machines that are supposed to shampoo your carpet. These machines are going to allow you to clean your carpet even deeper than you can with your vacuum and keep it looking like new. But you may be wondering whether or not you really need a carpet shampooer (either as a stand alone machine or as part of your vacuum cleaner attachments). Here is the answer!
No More Traffic Jams
If used regularly a carpet shampooer is going to keep those traffic patterns out of your carpet and rugs. You won’t see those footprints from the door to the sofa and from the sofa to the kitchen anymore.
Sure, to keep the wear and tear from showing in your carpet, you are going to have to plan to clean your rugs every 6 months (and probably more if you have pets or kids).
Sticky Fingers
Remember the first time your child got his sticky fingers all over the furniture? Well, even if you don’t remember the first time, you probably remember the last time he did it. Sticky fingers aren’t going to end anytime soon.
What is great about a lot of carpet shampooers is that they are going to actually allow you to use the attachments that come with them to clean off stains from upholstery. This can save a ton of money, because you won’t have to take the couch cushions to the dry cleaners so often anymore.
A Penny Saved…
You don’t have to have your own carpet shampooer to get things done. You can have a company do it for you.
When you get a few quotes on how much it is going to cost to get someone in to clean the carpet in your house, you are probably going to find that it costs more money than a brand new carpet cleaner is going to cost.
Sure, you have to do it yourself and the results aren’t going to be as good with a machine that you can buy versus what the professionals use, but you can use your machine after every spilled soda, after every muddy footprint and after every time your puppy forgets that it is potty trained.
You could also rent a machine from the supermarket, but if you want to deep clean your rugs often, you are going to have to add up the cost of the machine and see if it is worth it.
You are also going to have to calculate the “ick factor” of cleaning your carpets with a dirty machine that you get from the supermarket. One look at the beater bar on the machine (and all of the hair and gunk that is wrapped around it) is probably going to send you to the appliance store to buy a shampooer.
Who Doesn’t Need One?
There are some disadvantages to buying a carpet shampooer.
- They take up a lot of room in a closet.
- A lot of shampooers are poorly constructed (check out reviews to find the best one in your budget range).
- You have to do the work yourself (your couch is probably a lot more difficult to move than you thought).
- The results aren’t going to be as good as if you had a professional do it for you.
Once you weigh the pros and cons of having your very own carpet shampooer, it should be clear whether or not you need one.
Which model of shampooer do you have? Does it do everything that it was advertised to do?
